612 Howard Street was built in 1907, a six-story building of heavy timber construction, a cast-iron facade and masonry exterior walls. We believe that it was probably a warehouse in its early life that was long-ago transformed into office space. KPa+d designed a major overhaul of the building’s interior layout, accessibility, electrical, mechanical and plumbing infrastructure and interior aesthetic design to upgrade the building to meet the demands of the contemporary office-market in this part of San Francisco’s downtown. Remodeling of all the tenant-occupied floors and the lobby was phased, to allow for the building to operate during construction. Work was completed in late 2023.
